Hope it's ok to revive this old thread as it has no anwer yet. Painite is found in pristine metallic mining areas. I've been mining in HIP 21991, lots of Painite to find there but it's a bit far from Sothis. I remember trying mining for the Sothis gold community goal. There was a system with pristine metallic rings around a planet two jumps from Sothis. Will see if I can find it again tonight.

I actually resorted to hauling gold 300+ ly in my Python (during the Sothis CG). I'm not sure if this, or mining, was the correct answer. imgur.com/a/MtNy2

Hauling was clearly the right way to go. In the time it took me to buy a full ship of gold in my Clipper and haul it 380ly to Sothis I could mine around 20t of gold. It was unfortunate that they did the CG right before 1.4 came out as mining is a lot more profitable now prospector limpets increase the output of rocks significantly.
Mining is still reasonably profitable. I mined loads of painite, platinum and palladium alongside the gold. But it's not an efficient way to get one type of metal for a community goal.

Mendelt, feel free to start threads here as well, i think all members should have access to do so. There is or was a community goal near HIP 8369 which is another of the sirius corporation colonies in the pipeline in nowhere. Was for osmosis. Perhaps start a thread with mining spots within 30LY of sothis/ceos and add systems as u find panite/osmosis and the like.
Im not one for mining myself but we are on the lookout for a mining director of sorts / commanders to run group operations, im sure incognet will assist where he can. Of course we are still attracting new members all the time so it would be good to have an operations structure in place. Im tied up atm with some powerplay and sirius inc (our own faction) getting it to expand a few times and established so im wedded to san for at least the next 2 weeks with occasional trips to sothis and into avik which is the last sirius corporaiton expansion system

I completely overlooked that. But you're right found it after some googling. There is a community goal there for Osmium. It does not seem like anyone picked up on that, it's not even in the 'Active community goals' thread on the frontier forum. I'll look into it tonight and make a thread about it here when I have more information. Here is the relevant Galnet article; community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/561f7b109657badb5a202699

I only had an hour to play last night so I checked up on HIP 8369. But the community goal wasn't there. They usually run for a week and it was announced less than a week ago so I guess it never got started. Maybe they meant to release that post later or something. Got to keep an eye on it.

So maybe we need to swing by that system every second day, or maybe its something of a hidden thing, consider selling osmisum in small amounts in HIP 8369 and see if it "triggers" anything

I'm operating in that area anyway so I'll keep an eye out. I'm shipping gold from Sothis to HIP 8369 and HIP 8369 gives off a lot of lucrative hauling missions to the bubble. I need to fit a scanner to my ship so I can scout for good mining sites there too. I'll report back when I find something.
