It's an open-source Space Sim, reminiscent of "Privateer" and "Elite"

I first discovered this little gem in 2007... sadly, development appears to be on hiatus. But there are some neat full-conversion mods associated with it: "Vega Trek" and "Privateer Gemini Gold".
The in-game lore is memorable... an extinct human "meme-group" called the "Lightbearers" tried to enslave (and genetically modify) a primitive race of xenos. They failed, and were exterminated (by other angry humans) during the 1st Interstellar War.

(side note: In "Elite" Universe, the proto-Imperials are guilty of xenocide. The Federation sent a reprisal fleet to Achenar, but failed to stop the rise of Duval.)
